The AVS system compares the statement billing address on file with the credit card issuer with a customer's billing address provided with each order. The process helps in establishing the legitimacy of the cardholder and deters fraud. AVS allows merchants who accept card-not-present (CNP) transactions via the phone, mail order or the Internet to verify the billing address of cardholders.
